Autores, obras e acervos literários catarinenses em meio digital

         

NuPILL (Research group in Computing, Literature and Linguistics) has already 15 years of existence. Since 1995, we have built the greatest digital library and database on Portuguese language literature. Nowadays, we have almost 800 digitalized titles of Brazilian and Portuguese literary works, in addition to information about 70,000 works and more than 17.000 authors. One must stress that, besides providing access to all this digitalized literary works and information, we are committed to develop, in the last years, some tools to improve the using of the digital library and the database, in e-learning and e-reading activities. Furthermore, since the first years of our researches, we were concerned about developing a database and a digital library specifically devoted to the literature of the State of Santa Catarina. To do so, we built the Portal Catarina, which, financed by both CNPq (the Brazilian National Council on Scientific Research) and FAPESC (the State Foundation on Innovation, Science, and Technology), by means of a call for supporting excellence level research groups (recently renewed until 2015). With this project, we make available, in Internet, literary works, critics and information about or coming from writers of Santa Catarina, of all periods, besides of the important task of organizing, restoring, cataloging and making public personal collections of this writers, presently under the possession of the Santa Catarina Literary Academy.

            The Portal Catarina, in short, is a dictionary of authors and works of the State of Santa Catarina literature, built by means of a partnership between different research groups of our University (NuPILL, LAPESD, and nuLIME), and of other Brazilian (the Universidade do Vale do Itajaí, the Universidade de Joinville, and the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina) or Spanish universities (the Universidad Complutense de Madrid), as well as the Santa Catarina Literary Academy. As a consequence, we have digitalized some important and rare literary journals and magazines as Terra, Sul, Litoral, and O Moleque, and the work of important authors as Cruz e Sousa, Luís Delfino, Ernani Rosas, Araújo Figueredo, Virgílio Várzea, Horácio Pires Nunes, and Duarte Schutel. All this information is fully integrated to the digital library of NuPILL, which means that the learning and teaching tools we have developed (as the annotation tool for literary works in HTML or XML files) can be used by any users of our digital libraries and databases, in individual readings or in learning and teaching projects developed in the state public educational network. Last but not least, we must mention an important part of this project: the organizing, restoring, and  cataloging of some collections of literary authors as Ernani Rosas, Maura de Senna Pereira, and Delminda Senna Silveira. Most documents of this collections are in paper and suffers all kind of threatens to their integrity. Only a consistent effort on digitalizing this documents, precisely as we propose, could preserve them for future generations.

The developing or the Portal Catarina entails some activities, as the digitalizing of documents in paper, the reviewing of digitalized texts, the construction of  a digital library system, the cataloging of data in this digital library, the creation of an environment where one could propose formation courses to the teachers or the public teaching system of Santa Catarina, the recording and availability of video material about the authors and works which are present our digital databases and libraries, and, finally, the offering of this material to the Brazilian educational institutions.

In addition to the growing of our bibliographical collection, this project proposes the exploring of virtual environments in learning, and research activities, by developing multimedia resources and softwares which provide better learning and teaching processes in all educational levels, as well as the construction of reading tools to be used in e-learning systems. In order to allow people to use our digital collections, enabling innovative pedagogical practices, we intend to offer to the State Education Secretary of Santa Catarina, namely to the tearchers, some courses on digital reading and teaching of literary works. Concerning the community outside academies and teaching centers, we intend to involve the current reader in e-reading activities, contributing to intensify the habit of reading by means of computing tools and environments.
